White saltwater pearls beside cream freshwater pearls, strands and loose

pearl shoppers meet two families: saltwater and freshwater. The distinction is about the mollusc and the water it lives in, and it shapes size, colour range, nacre quality and price.

Saltwater pearls

Saltwater cultured pearls come from oysters, generally one pearl (or a few) per shell, which is part of their cost. Akoya pearls — classically white, round and lustrous — set the image most people have of pearls. South Sea pearls grow large with soft satiny nacre in whites and golds; Tahitian pearls bring naturally dark greys, greens and aubergine colours.

Freshwater pearls

Freshwater cultured pearls grow in mussels, often many per mollusc, which makes them the most affordable real pearls. Modern freshwater pearls achieve round shapes and strong lustre that rival Akoya at lower prices, and their colour range — whites, peaches, lavenders — is wide. Nacre is typically solid rather than a thin layer over a bead nucleus.

What it means for buyers

Neither family is “better” — they are different tools for different designs and budgets. Judging lustre, surface, shape and matching across a strand matters more than the water the mollusc lived in. Pearl evaluation in context is part of the gem-trade training at JDMIS; start with the gem and jewellery trade course or the pearl masterclass.
