Course outline

Throughout this course, theory and practical skills will be performed so as to master the 3D effect enhancing designs to a professional level in both monochromatic shading and full colour. Understanding of the right light source is required an importance to realise the heights and dimensions in each jewellery piece. Every possible surface type is covered from opaque metals and gems to transparent and translucent faceted and cab gemstones. Colour theory helps not only to combine colours in a pleasing and aesthetic way but is useful to successfully recommend a suited match with occasion or to best enhance individual customers appearance.

Light Sources & Producing Life-like Design

Before colouring can be mastered it is critical to understand the specific light-source direction used in jewellery enhancement and how it will affect the many types of surfaces encountered, from opaque to transparent. With monochromatic shading the theory is quickly grasped strengthening the colouring experience which follows.

Effective Colouring Technique

As time is of the essence today as we no longer have the luxury of using paint which is more laborious and time consuming. Waxed based coloured pencils are explored in detail to discover that, the vividness of colour can be achieve in the same way as painting, only faster. These pencils blend extremely well and hundreds of colours can be achieved from those obtained in the kit. Knowing the possibilities available with the tools provided is an important step to success.

Rendering Metals and other Opaque Materials

Having mastered the technique using coloured pencils the next step is to render Yellow and White gold effectively. Not only gold, but other popular metals found in jewellery today, will be discussed and any differences highlighted. The opaque gems commonly found and sold today can be one solid colour or have special effects which also need to be recognised in order to make them appear more realistic. See how Malachite, Onyx, Lapis and Rhodonite and Rhodochrosite come alive with colour and details.

Rendering Transparent and Translucent Materials

Many gems can be opaque, but most of them today will be either transparent or translucent. This requires a different technique to that already learnt to feel the full power of its effect. From faceted gems to cabochons in typical shapes and sizes discover what to do with technique and then what to add to achieve stunning results. More challenging gemstones are the phenomenal varieties where additional considerations are made to convey the interesting and unusual phenomena.

Rendering Meleé, Settings & Findings

The smaller the object the more challenging it will be to render. Discover how to deal with the smallest of gems, held in place with fine prongs or bezels and other tiny elements of design which need attention to complete the final piece. Additional practical knowledge in colour theory helps to make the best recommendations matched to the wearer and to the occasion.
