Pedestal prong setting for cabochon gems

Pedestal prong setting for cabochon gems

Design Principles for Secure Settings

Create jewellery settings from raw materials to manufacture secure, multi-pronged settings for cabochon gems of any shape or size. Starting with round wire, roll it evenly flat and shape it to precisely fit the contour of the gem. With the leftover wire rolled to ½ round create the bail and prongs. Solder all parts onto the frame symmetrically, polish to a high shine before setting the gem with the new tools provided in the kit.

Rolling mill techniques and Roll Printing

Rolling mill techniques and Roll Printing

Custom Wires and Textures

Explore methods for transforming round wire into specialized wire profiles that suit unique design requirements for prongs and bails and discover roll printing a technique where textured materials - such as fabric, paper, or organic items - are passed through a rolling mill with sheet metal to imprint patterns adding texture and enhancing contrast. These skills allow jewellers to create bespoke components and unique designs that elevate the originality of their work.

Cold connections, rivets, eyelets and creative cold joining options

Cold connections, rivets, eyelets and creative cold joining options

Innovative Non-Soldered Assemblies

Master techniques for joining metal parts without heat, enabling the creation of movable or mixed-material designs. These approaches are essential for complex jewellery pieces where soldering is impractical. Brass and copper rivets and eyelets are provided in various lengths and wire is used to produce invisible connections which give the illusion of a soldered join.

Working with pre-made Bezel and Prong settings

Working with pre-made Bezel and Prong settings

Efficiency and Professional Standards

Understand how to integrate commercial components into custom designs while maintaining craftsmanship quality. This knowledge helps jewellers save time without compromising on durability or aesthetics and gives a competitive edge in today’s challenging market. By learning to work with standard components, jewellers can offer clients faster turnaround times and cost-effective solutions without sacrificing originality or value.

Basic Filigree Techniques – Art of the ancient Greeks

Basic Filigree Techniques – Art of the ancient Greeks

Precision in Wire Manipulation

Learn to twist, shape, and solder delicate wires to form intricate ornamental patterns. Filigree work demands patience and precision, making it a hallmark of advanced jewellery artistry. This technique not only enhances the visual appeal of a piece but also reflects the jeweller’s mastery of fine craftsmanship and historical design traditions.

Basic Granulation – Working with Argentium

Basic Granulation – Working with Argentium

Achieving Uniformity in Decorative Elements

Learn about the benefits of Argentium when using this technique. Discover how to create and fuse tiny metal spheres for decorative effects that enhance jewellery designs. Consistency in size and placement is key to achieving professional-quality granulation. Mastering granulation requires precise heat control and meticulous surface preparation, as even minor errors can prevent proper fusing.

What is Metal Clay

After taking part in JDMIS' New Metals Technology I, II & III courses, you would have completed a myriad of beautiful eye-catching Metal Clay jewellery pieces by now. Yet there is still more to learn!Further your mastery in this unique form of jewellery making

Experiment with an interesting form of metal work that originated from Japan known as Mokume-Gane. Learn to inlay one metal into another and the considerations taken to ensure these methods of jewellery crafting turn out as beautiful as you envisioned them.

This is the fourth and final part in a series of our improved 30 hour "Experience" programmes that includes more projects and materials to ensure you build the confidence to create professional level jewellery.

Course outline

With experience comes the confidence to work with better quality materials. Master the combination of 22 karat gold into your designs, as well as how to fuse gold-leaf to silver designs to achieve an opulent look without the cost of solid gold. As well as working with the finest materials, mastery of metal clays requires expertise in creating moulds and patterns to produce consistent lines of precious metal jewellery.

In-lay Technique with Silver and Brass

In-lay Technique with Silver and Brass

Learn how to combine clay and paste types of metal clay to produce more vibrant and 3-dimentional designs experimenting with shape and textures formed by a useful 'build-up' technique. you will also learn additional methods of stone setting and the attachment to fine silver findings. Master the creation of crisp lines and accurate symmetry as well as invisible joins and effective repairs so as to produce quality, professional looking jewellery with sharp features. Your second project involves accurate reproduction of carved patterns and extended pre-finishing techniques to ensure perfection once the design is fired and polished.
Sculptural Designs for Wrist Jewellery

Sculptural Designs for Wrist Jewellery

Further refine your skills at making accurate, perfectly-sized rings and learn to combine clay and syringe metal clay types to create unique, refined filigree patterns or reliefs on any surface. Fire these designs into solid, lasting pieces of quality jewellery.
Art of Mokume-gane

Art of Mokume-gane

Instead of working with pre-fabricated syringe-type metal clay, learn the steps to prepare your own custom syringes and custom tips that allow exciting extrusion patterns that form the basis of your eighth project. Add a touch of elegance to this project by permanently setting a half-drilled cultured pearl using professional technique.
Mixed Metal Cintering

Mixed Metal Cintering

Learn about the characteristics of coloured glass and how to properly evaluate and combine glass of different refractive indices to form creative fused-glass centre pieces. Explore different methods of fusing glass using electric and microwave kilns. Following that use your very own glass creations to beautify your silver jewellery! With an emphasis on setting and firing techniques that will not damage the glass components, practice safe handling, fusing and firing and cooling of mixed glass and silver elements. Finally use correct polishing methods to make these glass & silver designs stand out.
Master Metal Clay Projects

Master Metal Clay Projects

Enamelling is an inexpensive and popular method of adding value to jewellery via simulation of inlaid gemstones or the creative use of colour. Traditional enamels however are painstaking and time consuming to apply. Use modern resins and dyes to simulate the depth of traditional enamels using popular modern UV/Epoxy techniques.
