Powder Metallurgy Techniques Modules (1, & 2)
Begin your journey as a precious metal artist with the latest technology in hand fabrication: Powder metallurgy. Mold 'metal clay' to create pure copper, silver and 22k gold jewellery, such as rings, pendants, earrings and brooches. Learn and perfect a variety of modelling methods, gemstone setting techniques and, after firing, traditional and non-traditional jewellery finishing techniques to create spectacular silver jewellery.

The science of powdered metals: Metals such as Copper, Silver and Gold are refined into an ultra-fine micron-size metal powder and then mixed with small amounts of water and organic binders to produce 'metal clays'. Metal Clays can be molded by hand or with sculpting tools to create truly unique designs!
Designers mould metal clays to sculpt their jewellery creations. These are then dried and can be further perfected before firing.
Once ready, metal clay pieces can be 'fired': heated using a has torch, gas stove or high-temperature kiln. With the suitable temperature and time, the binder and water burn off and the metal particles sinter - fusing together to form a solid metal jewellery piece.
You will develop the skills professional jewellery artists need to create stunning jewellery pieces using a wide variety of design and setting styles.
Powdered metals provide precious metal artists with a unique medium that is easy to learn, infinitely flexible and made from recycled material. Metal clay artists can create without limits and market their jewellery pieces not just as high purity precious metals, but also as 'green' jewellery designs.
With everything you need to be a successful designer, the JDMIS powder metallurgy programmes will help you achieve your dreams.
Traditional Metal-smithing (Modules 3 & 4)
Learn traditional ways to manipulate gold, silver, copper, bronze, and metal alloys. Build confidence working with metals by piercing, drilling, forging, fusing and soldering. Apply textures, rolling your own metal sheet and draw wires to custom thicknesses. Make joints and cold connections and prefect professional finishing techniques.

Working with the raw materials frees you to produce exactly what you envision! Jewellery designers are often at the mercy of the metalsmiths they commission to create their pieces. Fashion jewellery artists depend on their component suppliers. As a metalsmith however, your only limit is your imagination! Roll, saw, solder, rivet and polish precious metals into unique, wearable artworks.
Using established methods implemented by jewellers the world-over, JDMIS metal smithing graduates learn to work in a safe, professional environment and have ample time to practise their skills to build confidence and expertise!
With everything you need to be a successful designer, the JDMIS traditional metal smithing programme will help you achieve your dreams.
